How to apply for a scholarship

The 12-month timeline

1. 1.Shortlist 6–10 programs

   Month 12

2. 2.Book IELTS or TOEFL

   Month 10–11

   Most awards need IELTS 6.5+ (7.0 for Chevening and top US schools). Book two months before you need the score so you can retake.

3. 3.Request transcripts & recommendation letters

   Month 9

   Give recommenders 6+ weeks. Send them your draft SOP, your CV, and the specific programs you're applying to.

4. 4.Draft your Statement of Purpose

   Month 7–8

   Tailor each SOP to the program. See our guide to structure and examples.

5. 5.Submit scholarship applications

   Month 6

   Chevening, DAAD, Eiffel and Erasmus deadlines cluster between October and February. Miss one and you wait a full year.

6. 6.Submit university applications

   Month 4–5

   Some scholarships (Fulbright, MEXT) are decoupled from admissions; others (Erasmus, DAAD scholarship-with-programs) are bundled.

7. 7.Interviews & offer letters

   Month 2–3

   Chevening and Fulbright interview shortlisted candidates. Rehearse aloud and record yourself.

8. 8.Visa & pre-departure

   Month 1

   Book biometrics, arrange proof of funds, and confirm accommodation before you fly.

Documents almost every application needs

• Passport-style photo and valid passport (6+ months validity past intake)
• Transcripts + degree certificate (attested and, if needed, translated)
• IELTS/TOEFL score report
• Statement of Purpose or motivation letter (500–1,000 words)
• 2–3 recommendation letters on official letterhead
• CV / résumé, plus proof of work experience for Chevening-style awards
• Financial statement or sponsor letter
